Keeping Your Staff Safe At Work

When your staff are on your premises, it becomes your responsibility to ensure they are safe. Of course, you will already have all the proper insurance, but that is there to cover you when something happens. It is more critical for you to make sure that your staff are safe in the first place. 

Here are a few things that you can do to make sure that when your staff are on site, they are as safe as possible. 

Training

At least every person who is on shift should have first aid training. This ensures that all of the staff can be helped in case of an accident or a general health issue. It is possible to take classes in person, or you can arrange to have your staff take online training, find it here

 With at least one person on shift with a first aid certificate, you can be sure that the proper measure will be taken if something does happen. 

Overworked  

If the business you run has long hours, a lack of staff and the work involves a lot of physical effort; it is really easy to overwork your team and not notice. When your staff are overworked, they are more likely to make mistakes. 

But it isn’t the obvious stuff you need to look out for; if you have some staff members who keep taking overtime, it can be worth asking them for a chat and seeing if there is something that you can do to help. 

Staff who are overworked suffer from mental, emotional and physical issues. 

Law compliant 

Every country has a set of legalities about what they expect every business to adhere to. It is crucial that you make sure you are aware of all the regulations and make changes where necessary. 

Keep yourself and your safety officer aware of all new changes. 

Test, Test and Test 

If you have machinery, fire alarms, and other equipment, it is vital that you make sure they are tested regularly. It can be better to get them tested by a professional on a regular basis. You should be able to determine whether the equipment you have is acceptable for the task you do based on your safety policy and open lines of communication. 

It should be frequently inspected and audited to avoid using outdated and ineffective equipment, and replacement parts should be obtained where needed.

Safety policy

A safety policy needs to be written up to the highest spec possible and shared with all the people in the office. When you have an effective safety policy in all of the protocols, if there is an incident, they will have a reference for how they should act, where they should go and who they should contact.
