A Subjective Guide To the Best Films Of 2018 (So Far)

We’ve finally made it to that time of year where summer is on it’s way out and the time to chill is slipping back into our lives, which can only mean one thing for most Millennials: binge-watching movies and stuff.

Sure, the inevitable question of, “what are the best movies of the year?” is one that is usually reserved for mid-December, but we would much rather get this ball rolling now so that we have something to do with the ever colder nights other than becoming even more addicted to Fortnite.

No. This is not a top 10 or anything like that. It’s more like a list of awesome movies we would 100% recommend you watch; movies so good you could happily sack off that offer of going out to da club in favor of hitting up your local recreational weed dispensary and getting your watch well and truly on. These might not be your blockbusters, but they are some of the greats from 2018 – big and small. Enjoy.

You Were Never Really Here

Do you remember that epic film “We Need To talk About Kevin” that sprung up from basically nowhere? Well, this is the same director, but this time they’ve nailed the hitman movie like no one else has ever done. They’ve taken something totally death-obsessed and made it pulsate with life.

Annihilation

This is Natalie Portman being directed by the guy who did Ex Machina in a terrifying sci-fi thriller. It’s a team of women going into a quarantined part of Florida known as “Area X” to investigate something that can’t be explained and all the disappearances that come with it. It’s done in the same vein as 2001”: Space Odyssey in that we can’t quite fully handle the truth.

Mission Impossible – Fallout

If you haven’t heard how truly epic and utterly badass the latest Mission Impossible film is then we don’t know where you’ve been hiding this summer. It’s a film that has brought TC back to the top and a movie that has managed to make the MI franchise a legitimately awesome series. This movie will leave you breathless. It’s a blockbuster that has delivered where so many have failed. It’s a Hollywood hit and arguably one of the great action movies of all time.

Black Panther

From one blockbuster to another, only this one is from the Marvel Universe a movie that will forever be remembered for changing the movie industry. It’s high-tech, it’s futuristic, it’s intriguing, funny, full of action-loving-mayhem and, best of all, has a very subversive political stance. If you’re into Marvel, this could be the best one of the lot. If you’re not into Marvel, this is the perfect entry point.

A Quiet Place

When you are looking for a horror-slash-thriller to watch, most people will start by looking for an R-rating before deciding on which one to stream. This is not R-rated, but it will have you terrified nonetheless. It’s about a world where sound-hating monsters have taken over the planet, focussing on a husband and wife who live a life of extreme caution with their two kids, protecting them in a world where you have to all but live in silence. That set’s it up for some serious jumps.
