PHOTO Fire Rainbow Appears At Isle of Palms South Carolina

Gorgeous rare fire rainbows appeared on Sunday at Isle of Palms South Carolin. The rainbow effect occurs in cirrus clouds with many ice crystals.

Fire rainbow or circumhorizontal arc is “formed by hexagonal, plate-shaped ice crystals in high-level cirrus clouds.” The sun must be at an angle higher than 58 degrees when the light hits the crystals, forming what appears to be a rainbow cloud in the sky,
