United States Marine, Private First Class Joseph Scott Pemberton has been identified in the news as the suspect in the murder of the Filipino transgender Jennifer Laude.

Pemberton is suspected to have killed 26-year-old Laude on October 11 at a lodging house in Olongapo City in the Philippines.

Pemberton was positively identified by witness Mark Clarence Gelviro through a photo line-up process, the PNP memorandum said.

The suspect remains in US custody and there’s no guarantee that he will be turned over to Philippine authorities. Under the rules of the VFA, the Philippines has jurisdiction over the case, but the US has custody of the American personnel who will face charges.

According to GMA Network, Visiting Forces Agreement Commission Executive Director Eduardo Oban Jr. said US Pacific commander Admiral Samuel Locklear III has already ordered US ships in the country to stay in the islands until investigation is done.
