7 Horses Test Positive For Anabolic Steroid Stanozolol

Mahmood+Al+ZarooniThe British Horseracing Authority released a statement on Monday saying that 7 more horses trained by banned Mahmood Al Zarooni have been tested positive for anabolic steroid stanozolol.

Last month, Zarooni has been issued a ban for eight years after admitting doping offences. Fifteen of his horses have also been suspended from running for six months following a disciplinary panel hearing.

In a written statement after the hearing last month, Mr al Zarooni reiterated his regret over the issue.

“First and foremost, I would like to apologise to his highness, Sheikh Mohammed, as well as all those involved in Godolphin and the public,” he said.

“I accept it was my responsibility to be aware of the rules regarding prohibited substances in Britain.

“I can only apologise. I have made a catastrophic error.”

Simon Crisford, on behalf of Godolphin, described it as a “terrible day for British racing”.

“This is a terrible situation. It’s an awful situation that Godolphin has found themselves in,” he said.

“Mr al Zarooni acted with awful recklessness and caused tremendous damage, not only to Godolphin and British racing.

“I think it will take a very long time for Godolphin to regain the trust of the British public. We’re shocked and completely outraged by the actions he has taken.”

Eleven horses, including the former 1000 Guineas favourite Certify and the top stayer Opinion Poll, tested positive at their Newmarket stables on April 9.

Mr al Zarooni admitted a further four horses at his yard had been given banned substances.

Certify was one of seven horses to test positive for the anabolic steroid Ethylestranol, while Opinion Poll was one of four whose blood was found to contain Stanozolol.
