The Australian men’s relay swimming team have been fined over a scandal involving the drug Stilnox.
In a released statement, Swimming Australia found that “the six members of the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay team in London failed to demonstrate the level of conduct required of members of the Team by either: the inappropriate distribution and or use of the prescription drug Stilnox; participating in a bonding session that resulted in prank telephone calls and door knocking to fellow Team members in the late hours of the evening; and general misbehavior.”
Five of the six swimmers – Eamon Sullivan, Matt Targett, James Magnussen, Cameron McEvoy and Tommaso D’Orsogna – admitted at a press conference in Sydney in February that they took the banned hypnotic drug Stilnox. The sixth swimmer James Roberts denied using the drug but admitted to disturbing other swimmers with door-knocking and prank calls on the night in question.
