School Shooting Video Game Created And Caused Controversy (VIDEO)

video-gameControversy erupted after an unidentified developer created a digital reproduction of a real high school, Port Moody Secondary School in Port Moody, Canada, for the violet first-person shooter game Counter-Strike. The popular video game allows users to create customized scenes and share the “maps” with others. In this customization, the shooter wanders the school shooting military opponents. While no students or teachers appear in the game’s scenes, many are criticizing the developer for being insensitive to recent school shootings.

Alex Devlin, a physical education teacher at the school was shocked when he saw the game and said, “We have rainbow colored lockers, and it’s our field of dreams. And then to watch the video game and see people shooting up our field of dreams. It was, it was just so disturbing.”

The person claiming to be the developer is reportedly an alumnus of Port Moody Secondary School and said that the map, “…initiative was in motion well before the recent outbursts of gun violence.” He also said that the school was chosen not out of malicious intent but instead because it was a familiar setting and the architecture was, “rather ideal for the game’s tactics.”

Port Moody Police interviewed the developer and concluded that, “He does not pose a danger to the staff or students of Port Moody Secondary,” and “Although the creation of such a video game is likely ill-conceived in the current climate, it does not constitute an offense.”
