Australian Open 2012 Winner: Victoria Azarenka Defeats Maria Sharapova

Maria Sharapova’s chance of winning a new grand slam title ended when Victoria Azarenka defeated her in the 2012 Australian Open women’s finals on Saturday. This is Azarenka’s first Grand Slam title.

Victoria Azarenka now moved to the no.1 spot in the tennis ranking. She entered the entered the grand slam at #3. She is the first from Belarus to reach the top.

“I was super nervous. I couldn’t wait to actually go on the court and play. It was a long wait. I was like, ‘Okay, I’m ready to go. When is it coming? What time is it?’ I just think I really handled well the situation after that little slack in the beginning. I’m glad I could stay humble and just take it one at a time. Just keep fighting, keep fighting, and changing the momentum,” Azarenka said.

Azarenka dominated Sharapova in straight sets with the final score, 6-3 and 6-0.
