Guy Fawkes Day 2010 – Remember Remember the 5th of November

November 5 (Remember Remember the 5th of November) is the observance of Guy Fawkes Day 2010! Guy Fawkes, also known as Guido Fawkes, the name he adopted while fighting for the Spanish in the Low Countries, belonged to a group of provincial English Catholics who planned the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605.

Fawkes became synonymous with the Gunpowder Plot, which has been commemorated in England since 5 November 1605. His effigy is burned on a bonfire, often accompanied by a firework display.

On 5 November 1605 Londoners were encouraged to celebrate Protestant King James’ escape from assassination by lighting bonfires, “always provided that ‘this testemonye of joy be careful done without any danger or disorder'”.
