A new study published in the journal “Psychological Reports” looked at how feeling lonely is connected to smartphone or internet addiction in teenagers…and the results are eye-opening.
Loneliness is a growing problem among teens, and it’s known to affect both mental and physical health. Researchers reviewed 21 studies involving over 27,000 teens to understand the connection.
- They found a link between loneliness and smartphone/internet addiction. Teens who feel lonelier are more likely to show signs of addiction to screens.
- The connection was consistent across studies, showing it’s not just a fluke or limited to one group.
- Age didn’t seem to change the results much, and the studies showed little bias.
The bottom line: Loneliness and digital addiction often go hand in hand. Helping teens build real-life connections may reduce their need to escape online.
This is a wake-up call for parents, teachers, and mental health professionals. Supporting teen mental health means paying attention not just to screen time, but to what’s happening emotionally behind it.
