Making All The Difference: How Should We Create Our Own Career Path?
Getting on the road to a better you means turning the mirror onto yourself and looking at what you really want. Sometimes it’s a simple solution, but sometimes it’s something that can take years. When we’re unhappy in our career, it can drag us down, and impact us in so many different ways. After all, we spend one-third of our lives working! And when you’re looking to fix this, thoughts turn to making your own career path in life. But whether you are looking to move up the ladder where you are, or you want to make your own way, what are the things that need thinking about?
What Makes You Happy?
In some ways, it’s a very simple equation to solve. But so many of us can go over our ideas until they’ve lost all meaning. Sometimes we look at a career path, and think that is what we need to go on to provide some form of fulfillment. But when we are looking to make our working lives happier, it may not be the conventional route. You might think that you need a certain job with a specific salary for everything to fall into place, when in actual fact, you could work towards this and finds that it’s not the almighty answer you thought it would be. In terms of what makes you happy, it’s not necessarily about a career in a traditional sense, but it’s about finding out what makes you fulfilled at the end of the working day. And in fact, going on these journeys can make you discover a career that you had never thought of in a million years.
How Viable Is It?
Viability is one of those things we’ve all got to think about. If you want to make your own career, you could follow the path trodden by so many others, and start your own business. What you have to give consideration to at this point is if it fulfills a certain need, not in yourself, but out there in the great wide open. You have to make a living from it, and there’s no way around this. As amazing as it would be to earn a living doing exactly what you want, you’ve got to crunch the numbers and see if there is a gap in the market for that. And this is why we have got to go back to that very depressing statistic that 80% to 90% of businesses fail within the first year. It could very well be due to a lack of planning, or it may be just the fact that there wasn’t a demand for that sort of business. Understanding if what you want to do is viable is essential. And if it’s not, is there a way around it?
There Is No Shame In Asking For Help (In Fact, It’s Essential)
You’re not going to be able to do it all yourself. It’s about asking for help so you can fulfill your dreams. For those people that are forging their own career path by starting a business, they soon realize how important working with others really is. And this starts to really hammer home the point of networking, marketing, and all those other important notions that make a career investment viable. Whether it is something that improves marketing capabilities, like The Pin Factory so you are able to put a business logo on all sorts of items, or it’s about acquiring a mentor through LinkedIn, these things are all vital components to ensure that you are going in the right direction. Sure, there will be people that will raise an eyebrow or two at your plans, thinking that you are guaranteed to fail. But if you don’t try, how will you know if you succeed? Getting help is a fundamental right of anybody looking to forge their own career path. And let’s face it; we can’t do it by ourselves.
It’s Not Going To Happen Overnight
What we do need to do by ourselves, however, is work harder than we’ve ever done before. These changes in life result in a lot of soul searching. We have to work harder than anybody else to ensure that our efforts pay off. Forging our own career path means that we have to learn by our mistakes, but be realistic in the fact that it isn’t going to happen overnight. A lot of people decide to make a significant change in their career but gravely underestimate the work that needs to be put into making this change a reality. And in many ways, the journey to a new career is significantly more interesting than the final destination. As people may have specific goals about what they want to do with their lives, it gives them a sense of purpose, and they have to plan accordingly. They go on numerous courses, and learn about themselves in the process. When forging a new career path, you need to think about not just if you have the time to dedicate to it, but also if you have the constitution and the inclination. People underestimate how much work goes into doing something that they want. It’s that iceberg theory: you can only see the bit on the top, but not everything that’s going on underneath.
Whatever you decide, make sure you do it for the right reasons. People get blindsided by a career and a fancy paycheck, but are these things necessary to provide that fulfillment in life? Forging a new career path should be about serving your life for the better, not about getting you more money. What you do for a living should be part of who you are, and some people are more than happy for it to be a way to earn a living, but if you want to make significant changes to your life by changing your career, it can be a long journey, but with a great outcome that can make all the difference in who you are.
