The One-of-a-Kind TWA Hotel at New York JFK
There is a new hotel sensation at JFK in New York — the TWA Hotel. When news circulated that room reservations would be accepted starting on Valentines Day, February 14, I was one of those people who visited the TWA Hotel website to check for room availability. I was pretty sure that rooms would sell out quickly.
What’s special about the hotel? The TWA Hotel is part of Eero Saarinen’s TWA Flight Center, a historic 1962 landmark. The Flight Center was closed for good in 2001 when Trans World Airlines (TWA) ceased operations and merged with American Airlines. But now, after years of planning, the Flight Center structure has been turned into a 512-room TWA Hotel. Here are some features listed on the website:
- 50,000 square feet of meeting and event space that can host up to 1,600 people
- 6 restaurants and 8 bars
- 10,000-square-foot rooftop observation deck with pool
- State of the art 10,000-square-foot fitness facility with yoga, spinning and other amenities
- Museum devoted to the Jet Age, TWA and the midcentury modern design movement
- Classic Solari split-flap message board with authentic original mechanical operation manufactured in Udine, Italy
- 4,000 parking spaces
- AirTrain to JFK terminals
Reservations for the TWA Hotel is now open with room rates starting at $249.
