Tips to Stay Safe During Extreme Cold Weather
The dangerously cold weather is coming. Here are some safety tips to observe as wind chill temperatures dip to sub-zero.
- If you want to go outside, try to limit your time. Make sure you wear layers of warm clothing.
- The possibility of developing frostbite and hypothermia are high. Thus, watch out for the signs. Signs of frostbite include: loss of feeling and color around the face, fingers and toes, numbness, white or grayish-yellow skin, firm or waxy skin. - Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Do not use generators and grills indoors to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Also, do not use a gas stovetop or oven to heat your home.
- Watch out for older adults and young children, since they are more at risk in extreme cold.
- Keep your pets indoors to avoid weather injuries.
- If there is really a need to travel, make sure your tank is full. Keep an emergency kit inside your car. Bring your gloves, pack some extra warm clothes and thick blankets.
- If you have extra phone chargers, bring them with you when you travel.
