Preparing For The Worst Case Scenario With Natural Disasters

One downfall of our beautiful earth is that every now and then we are struck with natural disasters like hurricanes, earthquakes, flooding and many more. When times like these occur, the location it affects is left devastated, often taking people’s homes, pets and even their lives. Unfortunately there’s nothing we can do to prevent these natural disasters from happening, and with global warming on the increase, we’re experiencing them more frequently. Here’s how you can prepare yourself for the worst case scenario if you live in an area prone to natural disasters.

Insurance

First and foremost, if you haven’t already you should be taking out life and home insurance so that if disaster does strike where you live, then you’re covered so that you can afford all of the help you need to try and get back to normality. Cover your home against weather damage so that if your windows are smashed or your roof is ripped off during high winds then you’re covered to make the repairs. Life insurance will also cover you for any injuries you obtain, or if the worst does happen to you, then your family will be able to claim.

Home

If you don’t have a basement or shelter situated within your home, then it’s a good idea to do your best to weatherproof your home so that if something does happen, your home would be more likely to withstand the forces. You can install things like hurricane straps onto your roof to protect it from flying off, you can remove dead bushes if you’re in an area prone to fires to protect your home from catching alight, and you can add storm shutters to your windows to protect them from heavy rain and winds. If at all possible, create a space as low as possible in your home that you can retreat to for protection. Alternatively, you could purchase a storm shelter.

Support

Sometimes there is nothing you can do to stop the relentless weather from destroying what you’ve worked so hard to build, even if you’ve taken as many precautions as you can. One thing you should definitely put in place is some support to turn to if the worst does happen and you’re left homeless and your belongings have been destroyed in the process. One great thing about this planet is that as a society we do try to help each other in times of need. Issa Asad from Qlink writes here about how survivors of Hurricane Harvey were able to phone loved ones for free thanks to Qlink Wireless. Try and get something in place to turn to if your area is struck with disaster.

Your next step of course, is to rebuild. This won’t be an easy time, but make sure you surround yourself with those that you love, and seek help if you’re struggling to cope.

Natural disasters aren’t a thing that we can control, but if you take the necessary steps to protect yourself, then the process afterwards will be much easier. Stay safe!
