Winter Snow Storm in Hawaii Issued

Hawii may be in the middle of the Pacific ocean and you may think that this tropical country doesn’t get its share of snow. You are wrong. The Hawai’ian Islands experiences many different climates, depending on altitude and weather.

Just this weekend, the National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a winter storm warning for the summits of Hawaii’s Big Island.

A foot of snow is estimated to accumulate on the summits of Hawaii’s Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa volcanoes, which is above 12,000 feet.

Conditions on the summits are dangerous. Besides being cold, east to southeast winds of 25 to 40 miles per hour are expected with gusts to 50 miles per hour. The strong winds also will cause drifting snow, and freezing fog will reduce visibility to as low as a half-mile.
