Machu Picchu Death: Man Dies at Incan Landmark After Falling Off Cliff While Posing for Photo
German Oliver Paps, 51, entered a restricted area of the Incan landmark Peruvian ruins and asked another visitor to take his photo while he leapt in the air. He fell off the cliff, 650 feet to his death, officials said.
Oliver ventured into a restricted area of the tourist spot in the Andes despite signs warning people to stay away from the cliff’s edge.
Machu Picchu is located 8,000 feet above sea level, and the ruins lie on a high ridge offering astounding views of the Sacred Valley, through which the Urubamba River flows 2,000 feet below. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
More than one million people visited Machu Picchu in 2014 alone.
