Northern Arizona University: NAU School Shooting Kills 1 Injures 3

Four people were shot at the Northern Arizona University, NAU, school campus in Flagstaff, Arizona early Friday. According to the Northern Arizona University Police Department, the four victims included one dead, and three wounded. The shooter is in custody. Campus is not lockdown.

The three victims are being treated at Flagstaff Medical Center.

The incident took place outside Mountain View Hall on the northeast end of the Flagstaff Campus. The first call of shots fired came in at 1:20 a.m.

NAUPD is working on the investigation with the Flagstaff Police Department at the scene. More details will be released as they are forthcoming.

Update 1: Press conference regarding shooting on campus scheduled for 6 a.m. at NAU’s High Country Conference Center.

Update 2: NAUPD Chief Greg Fowler said the suspect in custody is Steven Jones, a freshman at NAU. The campus police department is working closely with Flagstaff Police Department on this ongoing investigation.

Update 3: The victims currently being treated at Flagstaff Medical Center have been identified as Nicholas Prato, Kyle Zientek and Nicholas Piring. The deceased student is Colin Brough. Further details will be released as they become available.

Update 4: A message from President Cheng regarding campus shooting

Dear Lumberjack family,

We awoke this morning to a terrible tragedy on our Flagstaff campus. As you may know, a shooting occurred in a north campus parking lot early this morning. The suspect is in custody, and there were four victims. One person was killed and three people are being treated at the Flagstaff Medical Center.

We are, of course, shocked and deeply saddened by the circumstances that bring us together this morning. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families, and our entire Lumberjack family.

We have assured the NAU community that the campus was immediately secured by our police department and classes will go on as scheduled. I am grateful for the collaborative work of our law enforcement officials on campus and in the city of Flagstaff who are investigating this isolated, and unprecedented, incident.

We are sensitive to the tragedy, and we are asking the faculty to be sensitive to the needs of our students and families. This is not going to be a normal day at NAU. Our hearts are heavy.

Support services are currently available to our students through Counseling Services. Faculty and staff can seek support through Employee Assistance and Wellness beginning at 8 a.m.

The Hot Spot in the University Union opened today at 6 a.m. to offer a place for students to gather.
