President Obama Says ‘Shame on You’ to Heckler at East Room White House LGBT Pride Event

President Barack Obama, with Vice President Joe Biden at his side, was heckled at an LGBT Pride Month event in the East Room of the White House on Wednesday. The heckler, identified as transgender activist Jennicet Gutiérrez, interrupted Obama shortly after he began to speak. Though much of what was said was inaudible, the individual was heard shouting “deportations,” journalists at the event confirmed.

“Hey. Listen. You’re in my house,” President Obama told the lady. “As a general rule I am just fine with a few hecklers,” Obama said, while saying this was different. “My attitude is if you’re eating the hors d’oeuvres … You know what I’m saying? And drinking the booze. …”

Obama told the heckler, “Shame on ya. You shouldn’t be doing this.”

This footage begins after those events, and shows Obama’s address.

Later, Jennicet Gutierrez issued a statement saying, “It is heartbreaking to see how raising these issues were received by the president and by those in attendance. In the tradition of how Pride started, I interrupted his speech because it is time for our issues and struggles to be heard. I stood for what is right. Instead of silencing our voices, President Obama can also stand and do the right thing for our immigrant LGBTQ community.”
