Jumping Sundog or Crown Flash Is The Phenomenon That Causes Weird Sunbeam In Sky (VIDEO)
What was that weird sunbeam in the sky that was shown in the viral video shared on social media? A mysterious beam of light has been observed behind a dark cloud that appeared to have originated from something out of this world. What was that beam of light? Was the video, which was taken in Greenwood, Indiana, fake?
In reality the rare weather phenomenon is called a ‘Jumping Sundog’ or ‘Crown Flash’ or ‘Leaping Sundog’. It happens when there are rapid light changes in clouds.
According to NASA, a jumping sundog occurs when a lightning discharge changes the electric field ‘above the cloud where charged ice crystals were reflecting sunlight.’ This changing field causes geometric crystals to find a new orientation and reflect sunlight differently.
The result is that the sundog, which would previously appear as a stationary beam of light, now appears to jump around.
