Joao Contreras’ brush with death was seen live on TV Tuesday night in Peru, where a Cup match between Sport Aguila and Fuerza Minera came to a sudden halt after a bolt of lighting hit the 21-year-old defender. In the video, you can see his limp body thumping the ground before the smoke could clear.
“During the transfer to the hospital, I could not remember anything. I woke up, I touched the body and felt my torn clothes. That’s where I got scared because I did not feel my legs,” said Joao Contreras, former player for Universitario de Deportes.
Joao Contreras told what the doctors said, “The lightning, according to the doctors, hit my face, then down my chest, my stomach and ends on my right ankle.”
“Thanks to all who were outstanding, supporting me, giving me encouragement to keep going,” Contreras told El Comercio of Peru.
When asked whether he will play football again or not, he replied, “The doctors have told me to take it easy, I have to do my rehab.”
