Train Crash in Switzerland and Many Are Reported Injured
A Swiss train has crashed after a landslide near the Swiss ski resort of St Moritz, in what police describe as a “serious” accident.
At least two carriages were thought to have left the track and were seen hanging over a ravine.
Peter Faerber, a police spokesman in the area, said some people were slightly injured in the accident but he could not immediately say how many. Some of the passengers were airlifted from the vicinity by helicopter.
Another police spokesman, Daniel Zinsli, said the incident occurred at about 13:00 local time and said it was difficult to get to the area by road. Four helicopters are at the scene, while the fire brigade, police and ambulance crews are trying to get there. Two carriages have been derailed, one has slid down a revine, while another is hanging periously over it.
The landslide happened after heavy rain in eastern Switzerland overnight.
The Swiss rail system is widely seen as among the safest in the world. But Wednesday’s accident comes two days after three people died when their minibus was hit by a train in central Switzerland.
