Solar Radio Blackout For 6/14/14? Solar Flares Could Send Shockwave To Earth Starting Friday The 13th
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) warned Wednesday that solar flares could send a “shockwave” to Earth on June 13, 2014 (June 14, 2014 in some parts of the world) and briefly disrupt communications.
Three powerful, X-class solar flares erupted from the sun this week. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory data indicate that an X2.2 flare and an X1.5 flare occurred on June 10, followed by an X1.0 flare on June 11.
The solar flares caused scattered communication blackouts on Tuesday and Wednesday. Researchers say that a shockwave could hit Earth on Friday. The wave may spark a minor geomagnetic storm and further disrupt communications.
“It’s back,” says Dean Pesnell of the Goddard Space Flight Center. “Solar Max has arrived.”
Pesnell points to a number of factors that signal Solar Max conditions in 2014: “The sun’s magnetic field has flipped; we are starting to see the development of long coronal holes; and, oh yes, sunspot counts are cresting.”
