Early Sunday morning, first-time gator hunter Rob Trammell and his wife Beth, had a surprise of a lifetime when they caught one of the largest gators on record at 13 feet 5.5 inches and 723.5 pounds.

The couple was among those who were given permits by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks to hunt alligators in the swamps of Mississippi river. The goal of the event was to manage gator populations and maintain an ecological balance in the wetlands.

According to the report, the catch beat the previous record for a male gator by a whopping 26 pounds.

NBC Reports that the current length record, which still hasn’t been broken, was set when hunters captured a 13-foot, 6.5-inch alligator on the Pascagoula River in 2008.
