Bangladesh Building Collapse Kills At Least 80 People (VIDEO)
An eight-storey commercial building housing garment factories and a shopping center collapsed on the outskirts of Dhaka on Wednesday morning (April 24), killing at least 82 people and injuring more than 500. The death toll can rise further as many more lay trapped under the debris. Fire fighters and army personnel were working at the Rana Plaza building in Savar, 30 kilometres (19 miles) outside Dhaka, to rescue people trapped inside.
The Rana Plaza employed more than 5,000 garment workers when it came crashing down
Mohammad Asaduzzaman, officer in charge of the area’s police station said that factory owners appeared to have ignored a warning not to allow workers into the building after a crack was detected in the block the previous day. Bangladesh’s booming garment industry has been plagued by fires and other accidents for years.
