4-Year-Old Living On Sugar After Mother Died At Home

Maintenance workers found a malnourished 4-year-old and the body of his dead mother inside their apartment complex in northern New Jersey after neighbors reported a foul odor. Police estimated she had been dead two to three days before the discovery was made early Tuesday. According to ABC reports, the boy survived by eating from a bag of sugar.

The dead woman has been identified Wednesday as Kiana Workman, 38.

As of Wednesday, the boy is confined in a hospital and being treated for malnourishment and dehydration.

The boy weighed 26 pounds, but at the age of 4 and 1/2 should have weighed 40 pounds or more, Police Director Daniel Zieser said.

Adoption offers are pouring in from around the world as police try to locate Workman’s brother.
