Two American females battled in the quarterfinals round of the 2013 Australian open on Wednesday. The older Serena Williams played against the teenager Sloane Stephens for a place in the semis. In the end, Stephens prevailed, stopping the 15-time Grand Slam winner Williams’ winning streak in a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory.
After winning her first Grand Slam quarterfinal, Stephens will next play defending champion Victoria Azarenka.
Stephens, who is big fan of the Williams sisters, said in an interview: “This is so crazy. Oh my goodness. I think I’ll put a poster of myself (up) now.”
Maria Sharapova won 6-2, 6-2 in her quarterfinal game against Ekatrina Makarova on Tuesday. She will face Li Na next, who reached the semifinals after beating Agnieszka Radwanska 7-5, 6-3.
