Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball 2011

For the fourth straight year, the Allstate Sugar Bowl will sponsor the Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball Tournament. The 2011 event will run from Nov. 30 to Dec. 3, 2011 and will be played at Jesuit, Brother Martin, Rummel and Holy CRoss, with the semifinals and championship being played at Holy Cross’ newly renovated gym. This year marks the 58th year of the tournament.

“We are grateful for the support of the Allstate Sugar Bowl again this year,” said CYO Director John Smestad. “This partnership with the CYO brings together two great athletic traditions in New Orleans, and we look forward to another opportunity to showcase the best in high school basketball.”

After cruising through the first three rounds of the 2010 Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball Tournament, St. Augustine High School found itself in a barnburner in the Saturday evening Championship game at Jesuit High School. After winning its first three games by an average margin of 29 points, the Purple Knights still took care of business in a close battle, knocking down a pair of free throws with four seconds to go to edge Brother Martin, 66-64. It is St. Aug’s first title in the event since 2007.

Craig Victor, a 6-7 freshman, led St. Augustine to the title and earned Most Valuable Player honors. He was joined on the all-tournament team by teammate Javan Felix as well as Casey Wade and Amani Thomas from Rummel and Denzil Fleming and Schane Rillieux from Brother Martin.
