Cathedral High School Shooting Incident Update
The Cathedral High School community is invited to participate in a fellowship gathering from 6-8 p.m. tonight in the Student Life Center. The gathering is in response to an isolated incident that occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m. today, involving a juvenile male who shot himself while on campus. That young man is currently in stable condition, according to IMPD Det. Brian Lemond, one of the emergency responders on the scene.
“We think it’s important to be able to offer our community an opportunity to come together in prayer and fellowship,” said David L. Worland, principal. “Anyone who would be comforted by gathering with others is more than welcome to attend this evening.”
Worland went on to explain that in addition to faculty and staff, licensed counselors will be available this evening, and throughout the school day tomorrow.
“We will be on a regular school schedule tomorrow, but we understand that some of our students, parents, and faculty and staff members may have some concerns they want to work through,” Worland said. “We want to offer as much help and assistance as we can for folks, to try to bring some comfort and understanding for a situation that is hard to define and even harder to understand.”
Additionally, Worland said any parents who have specific concerns are welcome to attend a parent meeting that will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14 in the O’Malia Auditorium.
The incident occurred this afternoon near the end of the school day, when the male juvenile phoned into the switchboard at Cathedral and instructed personnel he had harmed himself. Emergency responder personnel were called and Cathedral’s student safety responders immediately went to the area on campus from where the student called, securing that area. President Stephen J. Helmich activated the school safety plan, by asking all students, faculty and staff to remain where they were so that emergency personnel could come onto campus unimpeded and assist the young man.
No other students, faculty or staff members were ever in danger during the course of the incident.
