What an epic game last night at the Australian Open when two competitive women, Francesca Schiavone and Svetlana Kuznetsova, played the longest women’s match at a major tennis game. French Open champion Schiavone beat two-time Grand Slam winner Svetlana Kuznetsova (6-4, 1-6, 16-14 ) over 4 hours, 44 minutes on Hisense Arena, Melbourne Park.

The previous longest women’s match at a Grand Slam was a 4 hour, 19 minute first-round contest between Barbora Zahlavova Strycova and Regina Kulikova at Melbourne Park last year.

Schiavone’s quarterfinal opponent will be the No. 1 seed, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark.
