San Bruno Fire Caused by PG&E Gas Line Explosion

ABC News reported about the San Bruno fire caused by the explosion of a gas line.

At least one person has been killed and 53 homes have been destroyed after an apparent gas line explosion in a residential neighborhood south of San Francisco according to officials and local media and wire reports.

The explosion occurred just after 6:15 p.m. Thursday in a residential area near highways 280 and 380 in San Bruno.

Witnesses told ABC News affiliate KGO-TV that flames as high as 100 feet in air could be seen as winds continue to fan the fire.

The blaze is 50 percent contained. Officials estimated about 120 homes were damaged.

At least 25 people were hurt and taken to local hospitals the Associated Press reported.

As many as 100 people have been evacuated and sent to local shelters. A State of Emergency has been declared KGO-TV reported.

PG&E confirms in a statement that the gas line in the area belongs to the company.
