Boy Spies of America

The Boy Spies of America is one of the many quasi-official organizations that sprung up during World War I. Others were the Home Defense League, the Sedition Slammers, and the Terrible Threateners. Originally, these organizations found and punished Americans who spoke out against the war. But soon they started going after people who spoke out against any part of American life.

Specifically, the Boy Spies of America was a children’s group dedicated to volunteer spying which arose during that war.

Members reinforced a climate of anti-German sentiment and stopped young men on the street, demanding to see their draft cards. The organization did not successfully identify any German spies.
