QR Barcodes on Facebook

I noticed a new feature on Facebook today, the QR Barcodes. The feature appears under the user’s profile picture. QR or Quick Response codes are becoming more popular in recent years, and they are different from UPC codes as they are not just straight lines, but various patterns of square blotches in a specified area.

How to use the QR Barcodes?

[via] There has been no official announcement from Facebook yet about their desired uses for the QR code, but people could use them in any way they wanted.

When meeting new people, instead of having the burden of remembering a person’s name to later look them up once a computer is more readily available, now a QR code can be scanned, and the person’s Facebook profile will be immediately available in the palm of someone’s hand.

QR Codes can be generates based on status updates, in case someone had a witty remark that they wanted to share with the world.

Facebook has become more of a social marketing venue, along with a place for friends to “hang out”. Because of this, a company could put their QR Code on business cards. Forget the burdens of remembering a Web site URL, or the annoying requirement of actually typing in a Web address. Now, all that is required is a camera linked to a phone that has web accessibility.

Facebook will not not only be on the computer, but also in people’s pockets, their resumes, and maybe someday, tattooed so their virtual selves become connected eternally to their real selves.
