Weird Sports That Are Well Worth Getting Into

Some people love sports; some people hate them, and that’s fair enough. After all, not everyone has to be into the same things. However, it can sometimes feel as though you’re missing out on all of the fun that people who are sports fans seem to be having. Of course, the issue might not be that you’re not into sports, but rather that you haven’t found any sports that pique your interest. Things like football, soccer, baseball, and hockey are all well and good, but they’re not exactly what you’d call interesting. With that in mind, here are some slightly more weird and unusual sports that you might want to give a try.

Chessboxing

It probably doesn’t take that much effort to figure out what happens in chessboxing. If you answered chess and boxing, then give yourself a point because that’s exactly it. Competitors alternate between rounds of the game of medieval strategy and pummeling each other to smithereens. At first glance, the two sports might seem like a weird match, but they actually have more in common than you might think. Both involve being able to predict your opponent’s move several steps ahead. It’s just that one involves a lot more punching.

Foosball

This perennial dorm room favourite might not seem like much of a candidate for a serious sport, but there’s actually a pretty significant culture around it. There are foosball tournaments, foosball fans, even foosball memes! And hey, it’s the kind of thing that just about anyone can try. It doesn’t exactly require a huge amount of physical strength, just a decent amount of dexterity and the ability to keep your eye on that tiny ball at all times.

Extreme ironing

If you’re thinking that the name of this sport is some kind of red herring and that it’s not exactly what it sounds like, you’re wrong. Whether you think it’s ridiculous or incredible, there’s no denying that the people who have taken this common domestic task and elevated it to something of an art form. They take their clothes and iron them in strange and dangerous places all around the world. Some people even take it to the next life, doing dangerous stunts while ironing.

Octopush

This sport is otherwise known as underwater hockey, but let’s be honest, octopush is just a way better name. Two teams compete, trying to push a hockey puck along the bottom of a swimming pool and trying to get it into the opposing team’s goal. As ridiculous as this sport might sound, it actually has a pretty well-established history. It even has it’s own world championship and has done since 1980!

Of course, it might end up that you’re destined not to be a sports fan. And hey, there’s nothing wrong with that! Just because other people like something doesn’t mean that you have to! The world is big and wide enough for people to have whatever interests they like without having to worry about what other people enjoy doing.
