Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov Shot Dead at Museum

Russian Ambassador to Turkey, Andrey Karlov, was speaking at a museum in the capital city of Ankara on Monday when a gunman dressed in a suit and tie shouted “Allahu Akbar” and opened fire, an NBC producer and an Associated Press photographer reported.

“Allahu akbar” is the Arabic phrase for “God is great”. He continued saying in Arabic: “We are the descendants of those who supported the Prophet Muhammad, for jihad.”

According to reports, the lone gunman fired eight shots and smashed several of the photos at the exhibition.

Turkish police then killed the gunman, citing the Turkish station NTV.

Karlov was rushed to a local hospital and a Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman said he was dead, the AP reported.
