Filipino Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz Wins Rio Olympics 2016 Silver Medal

The Philippines is now in the 2016 Rio Olympics medal board. Thanks to Filipino weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz who won the country its first medal early morning on Monday, Manila time.

Hidilyn Diaz, from Zamboanga City, took the silver medal in the women’s 53-kg division with a total score of 200. Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Shu-Ching won the gold with a score of 212. The bronze medal went to South Korea’s Yoon Jin Hee with 199.

This is the Philippines’ first medal since 1996 when boxer Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco bagged the silver in the Atlanta Olympic Games.

Diaz qualified for the Rio Games after winning bronze in the International Weightlifting Federation World Championship in Houston, Texas.
