Thousands of Antelope Died in Kazakhstan Just Within Four Days (PHOTO)

In late May, thousands of steppe-dwelling antelope (estimated close to 60,000) died withing four days in central Kazakhstan. Veterinarians and conservationists are now trying to find out the cause of the deaths.

Geoecologist Steffen Zuther said that bacteria may have played a role in the deaths of the animals, how these normally harmless microbes could take such a toll is still a mystery.

Authorities are making every effort to establish the causes of death, however according to Zuther, the only possible environmental cause was that there was a cold, hard winter followed by a wet spring, with lots of lush vegetation and standing water on the ground that could enable bacteria to spread more easily.
