Apply for NASA 2015 Journalism and Multimedia Summer Internships

NASA invites students working towards degrees in journalism, communications, media relations, science writing, interactive media, or broadcast journalism, to participate in our science storytelling program – before you graduate. You’ll gain on the job experience as you work with a leading team of writers and multimedia producers to create and share content from some of NASA’s most exciting missions: mind-blowing results from the Hubble Space Telescope; breaking solar storm imagery and the emerging field of space weather; new views of the moon from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter; and stories of our changing planet from NASA’s Earth observing fleet of satellites.

Our internships are designed to give students broad exposure to the many moving parts of the our busy newsroom. Students wishing to explore the intersection between print, web, broadcast journalism and social media environments are particularly encouraged to apply.

DUTIES: Writing, editing, pitching, recording, creating, crunching, captioning, surfing, shooting, feeding, porting, posting, designing, updating, networking, texting, tweeting, tracking, designing, building, playing, mashing, and exploring. Students will service as reporters and will collaborate on sophisticated communications campaigns and help create web features, press releases, newsletter articles, press conferences, media interviews, social media events, satellite media tours, and video news releases. ADVANCED INTERNSHIP OPTION: [available to graduate students or returning interns] Advanced internships are available for students who wish to focus a particular communications activity such as science writing, video editing, social media events, or public engagement. To be eligible for the advanced internship, students should submit a paragraph on what you would like to explore, and how it relates to your educational goals.

Students will serve as “reporters” and will create stories, features, and content for NASA’s public web, video, and social media distribution channels. Students may present their work at an optional poster session.

Excellent writing skills and personal participation in social media communities required. Students should be familiar with AP style and have some experience writing press releases and features. Experience in campus newsroom, web, video, still photography and multimedia environments desired.

While applications will be accepted to the OSSI deadline, we will be conducting interviews and making selections on a rolling basis. Ergo, students are encouraged not to wait until the last minute.
