LPGA US Open 2014: Women’s Open Championship Kicks Off Thursday With Stacy Lewis Taking The Lead

pinehurstLPGA US Open 2014 Women’s Open Championship. In a round befitting the world’s number-one ranked player, Stacy Lewis fired what she called and “easy” round of 3-under 67 to take a two-stroke lead midway through the first round of the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open Championship. Lewis hit 13 of 14 fairways, 17 of 18 greens and made no bogeys on the day.

The players who started in the morning were greeted with ideal scoring conditions and a course that was set up at 6,296 yards, more than 350 yards shorter than the 6,649-yard number that is listed as the maximum yardage that Pinehurst No. 2 will be set up for the championship. Still, Lewis was one of only three players to post an under-par round, the others being 2011 U.S. Women’s Open champion So Yeon Ryu and Katherine Kirk, who each shot 1-under 69.

Two-time (2000, 2001) U.S. Women’s Open champion Karrie Webb was the only player among the morning starters to shoot even-par 70. The average score for the morning was 76.05. Lucy Li, the 11-year-old who became the youngest person to ever qualify for the championship, shot an 8-over 78.

A full recap of today’s first round will be available following the conclusion of play. Tune into first-round coverage on ESPN2 from 3:00-7:00 p.m. EDT.
