Jamaica Crash Landing Of Plane Caused By Fatigued Crew

Fatigued CrewAn investigation into a headline-making plane accident almost five years ago at a Jamaican airport concludes a commercial jet landed long and the flight crew may have been fatigued.

In December 2009, an American Airlines plane overshot a runway at Kingston’s airport and split apart. It came to rest on sand dunes near the Caribbean Sea.

The plane was destroyed but all 154 people aboard survived. Fourteen people were seriously hurt, though there were no life-threatening injuries.

The Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority said Wednesday it has issued its final report on the incident.

Among other findings, it says the jet crossed the runway threshold 20 feet above the ideal height and landed long.

It also says crew “were possibly fatigued after being on duty for nearly 12 hours.”
