AdvoCare V100 Bowl 2013: Arizona vs Boston College
The Independence Bowl Foundation is excited to announce Boston College and the University of Arizona will be the participants in the 2013 AdvoCare V100 Bowl.
“We are very excited about Arizona and Boston College playing in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl,” 2013 AdvoCare V100 Bowl Chairman John Hubbard said. “These are two programs on the rise with excellent coaches and high-powered offenses.
“We look forward to the high-profile running back match up that will be on display in Shreveport, with Andre Williams from Boston College and Ka’Deem Carey from Arizona.”
Boston College, (7-5, 4-4) is the Atlantic Coast Conference’s representative in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl. This will be the Eagles first trip to play in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl/Independence Bowl.
“We’re thrilled, we’re excited to be playing in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl,” head coach Steve Addazio said. “Our players are excited and can’t wait to get started. It’s a good challenge for our team and it will be a thrilling game.”
The Eagles are led by senior running back Andre Williams, who leads the nation in rushing yards with 2,102. He is just the 16th player in college football history to post a 2,000-yard season, joining some of college football’s most revered names, such as Barry Sanders, Marcus Allen, LaDainian Tomlinson and Ricky Williams.
He is currently in ninth place on the all-time list for yards in a season, but needs just 84 yards to move past Troy Davis of Iowa State for fourth all-time. He leads the nation at 175.2 yards per game. The unanimous All-ACC first-team selection scored 17 touchdowns for the Eagles.
Williams is a Doak Walker Award finalist and possible Heisman Trophy finalist.
BC also has the steady hand of senior quarterback Chase Rettig to run the offense. Rettig has passed for 1,804 yards with 17 touchdowns to just six interceptions. His top target is third-team All-ACC wide receiver Alex Amidon, who amassed 67 catches for 895 yards and five touchdowns.
The Eagles are known for producing top talent at linebacker, and are led defensively by senior linebackers Kevin Pierre-Louis and Steele Divitto. Divitto, a third-team All-ACC selection, leads BC in tackles with 107, including five for loss and two sacks. He also has an interception and five passes broken up.
Pierre-Louis, a first-team All-ACC selection, is second on the team with 104 tackles, including 10.5 for loss and six sacks. Third-team All-ACC defensive end Kasim Edabali leads the team in tackles for loss (15) and sacks (9.5).
First year head coach Steve Addazio has the Eagles in their first bowl game since the 2011 Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl after going 2-10 in 2012.
The Arizona Wildcats (7-5, 4-5) of the Pac-12 are an at-large representative in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl. This is Arizona’s first trip to the AdvoCare V100 Bowl/Independence Bowl.
“On behalf of our football program, and all the Arizona fans and alumni across the nation, this is a great honor and we’re excited to represent U of A in Shreveport, La.,” head coach Rich Rodriguez said.
The Wildcats become just the third Pac-12 team to play in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl/Independence Bowl’s 38-year history, joining Washington (1987) and Oregon (1989, 1992).
Arizona features a top-tier running back of its own in junior Ka’Deem Carey, the 2013 Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year. He is the first Arizona player to win that award.
He is fifth in the country in rushing yards at 1,716, and second nationally in rush yards per game at 156. He has gotten into the end zone on the ground 17 times. He is also fourth on the team in receiving with 26 catches for 173 yards and another score.
Carey, Arizona’s all-time leading rusher, joins Williams as a Doak Walker Award finalist.
Arizona’s dual-threat quarterback, senior B.J. Denker, has thrown for 2,241 yards and 14 touchdowns to seven interceptions. He also has 898 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns. His top target is freshman receiver Nate Phillips, who leads the team with 503 yards on 42 receptions and a team-high seven touchdowns.
Defensively, the Wildcats are led by All-Pac-12 honorable mention linebacker Marquis Flowers, who has 86 tackles, including 8.5 for loss.
Senior defensive lineman Sione Tuihalamaka leads Arizona in tackles for loss (11) and sacks (5). Junior safety Tra’Mayne Bondurant leads the team in interceptions with four.
Arizona’s biggest victory of the year was a 42-16 home blowout against No. 5 Oregon.
Rodriguez, is in his second season with the Wildcats, has lead the team to a bowl game in each of his first two years. It is the fifth time in the last six years the Wildcats have made a bowl game.
This will be the first meeting between Arizona and Boston College. It is also the second-consecutive year that both participants are making their first appearance in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl/Independence.
