MICROSOFT-SURFACE

Microsoft launched its newest Surface tablets — the Surface 2 and the Surface Pro 2 on Monday, September 23 in New York City. We listed the specs of the tablets in an earlier post.

Microsoft vice president Panos Panay said that the new device includes Microsoft’s revamped Windows 8.1 system, the popular Outlook program and access to ten times as many apps as the previous version.

What is the price of the Surface 2? It depends on your location. For US customers, the basic Surface 2 will start at $449 and the Surface Pro 2 at $899.

Surface 2 Pro will be powered by a fourth-generation Intel “Haswell” processor. The basic version, Surface 2, uses an Nvidia Tegra 4 processor, and battery life could run to up to 10 hours for video playback.

It will be sold initially in 22 markets, with pre-orders starting Tuesday. Microsoft said the new tablets would be initially available in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Britain and the United States on October 22, and in China in early November.

Microsoft shares fell 0.16 percent to $32.74 on the news.
