Connecticut Carnival Ride Collapse: Many Riders Reported Injured (VIDEO)

Oyster Festival Swing Ride CollapseThe rotating swing called The Zumur jolted to a stop, sending riders colliding into one another on Sunday’s Connecticut Carnival Ride collapse.

A roating swing ride suffered a mechanical failure during a festival in Norwalk, Conn., Sunday afternoon, injuring more than a dozen people, most of them children, authorities said.

Police said 12 children and one adult were injured when the ride stopped suddenly while operating, sending riders crashing into each other at the Norwalk Oyster Festival.

Police said all but one of those injured was treated and released at area hospitals. Police Lt. Paul Resnick said an 8-year-old boy was admitted to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police called in the state fire marshal’s office to inspect the rides.

Stewart Amusement Co. of Trumbull, Conn., operator of the rides at the Norwalk festival, could not be reached for comment. Calls to the company’s office were not returned.

The Norwalk Seaport Association, sponsor of the festival, said that it temporarily halted all rides following the accident and restarted them later Sunday afternoon following inspections. The swing ride remained closed.

“The Connecticut State Police Fire and Emergency Investigative Unit is onsite and has authorized Stewart Amusements to reopen the other rides for the remainder of the evening,” the association said in a statement. “Stewart has also reinspected all of the other rides.”

Troopers with state police fire and explosion unit were investigating the Carnival Ride collapse, department spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance said.
