One person has been killed and 11 injured after a car crashed into a crowd of people on one of southern California’s most popular beach spots. The victim died in hospital hours after the crash at Venice Beach boardwalk on Saturday night, Los Angeles police lieutenant Andy Neiman confirmed.

CCTV footage showed a man, now identified as 38-year-old Nathan Louis Campbell, parking his black vehicle alongside the seaside boardwalk and watching the scene for several minutes before getting back into the car and speeding into the crowd.

Louisa Hodge, 35, who witnessed the crash, said: “There was people kind of stumbling around, blood dripping down their legs looking confused not knowing what had happened. Another victim is in a critical condition and two others are in a serious condition.

The driver fled the scene, but an hour later a man walked into a police station in Santa Monica and said he was involved in the crash, Lt Neiman said. Police then found a car nearby that is thought to be the one involved in the crash.

Venice Beach boardwalk, a 1.5-mile stretch that runs along the sand, is home to galleries, restaurants and tattoo shops. It can draw as many as 150,000 people on summer weekends and is popular with joggers and inline skaters.
