ios mavericksHere are some of the highlights and features of the new Apple iOS X Mavericks, which was unveiled today at the Apple WWDC 2013 conference.

The new iMac is now the #1 desktop in the US, and the MacBook is the #1 notebook in the US. “The Mac business has out-paced the PC business for several years now.” Mac growth is 15 percent over the past 5 years, vs. 3 percent for the PC.

Tim Cook said that 28 million copies of Mountain Lion have been shipped, the best selling release of all Mac versions in the past. About 35 percent of users have updated, versus less than 5 percent for Windows 8.

Then came the revelation: “So for our first California themed release, we went just outside our back yard … OS X Mavericks.”

Here are some of the features of the new iOS:

On Finder Tabs: You can now combine a bunch of Finder windows together into tabs, with different locations and view modes. You can drag things across tabs.

Tags is feature number 2. You can add tags for a document when you save it, which will appear in the finder sidebar. You can tag them anywhere, whether local or in iCloud, and you can find things across them all. Tags appear as shortcuts in the left sidebar in Finder. And, you can of course apply multiple tags to a given document.

In Mavericks, it will compress those apps into memory. 1.4x performance improvement over Mountain Lion, even with an SSD.

Mavericks will be available as a digital download from the Mac App Store.

Preview of OS X Mavericks is available today for developers for now. The final release comes this fall.
