Teacher Fired For Bible Sharing With A Student in Phillipsburg Middle School

The teacher of Phillipsburg Middle School, Walt Tutka, made this remark to one of his students, “So the last will be first, and the first will be last”, while teaching in class. The student asked where the teacher got the phrase from, and the teacher showed him a copy of the bible on Oct. 12.

The incident prompted the school board to investigate and on Jan. 14, Tutka was fired for violating district policy.

Tutka now filed a complaint against the Phillipsburg School District, claiming religious discrimination and retaliation as the reasons for his dismissal from the district in January, according to the report.

Lawyer Hiram Sasser, director of litigation for Liberty Institute and representing Tutka said, “All Walt did was respond to a student’s intellectual curiosity and the school district suspended and then terminated him.”

No comment from the Phillipsburg School District about the complaint has been released yet.
