The Onion Apologizes For Tweet About Quvenzhane Wallis

Quvenzhane WallisThe satirical news site, The Onion, posted a vulgar tweet on Sunday during the Oscars 2013 ceremony. The tweet was targeted to 9-year-old best actress nominee Quvenzhane Wallis.

The Onion official Twitter account said:

“Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhane Wallis is kind of a c—, right?”

The use of “the C-word” on the child caused an online rage and demanding an apology from the online newspaper.

On Monday, CEO Steve Hannah posted on its website Monday apologizing for the tweet:

“I offer my personal apology to Quvenzhane Wallis and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the tweet that was circulated last night during the Oscars. It was crude and offensive — not to mention inconsistent with The Onion’s commitment to parody and satire, however biting.”

The note also said the people responsible for the tweet will be disciplined.
