India News: Times of India Reports Deadly Attack

In the latest India news, at least 17 people are reported dead when bombs simultaneously exploded at crowded areas in Mumbai at rush-hour on Wednesday, from 6:50pm. to 7pm. According to Times of India, “one blast hit the crowded neighborhood of Dadar in central Mumbai. The others were at the Zaveri Bazaar, which is a famed jewelry market, and the busy business district of Opera House, both in southern Mumbai and several miles (kilometers) apart.”

Because of the close timing of the string of explosions, “we infer that this was a coordinated attack by terrorists,” home minister Palaniappan Chidambaram said.

CNN reported that more than 100 others have been injured of the blasts.

The area in Dadar is near a train station used by millions of commuters. In 2006, a series of seven explosions killed at least 174 people on crowded Mumbai commuter trains and stations.

Zaveri Bazar is near a Hindu temple, in which some people were injured, Mumbai police representative Nisar Tamboli told CNN-IBN. Zaveri Bazar was one of the scenes of a twin bombing in 2003 that killed 54 people and also came under attack in the 1993 bombings that left 257 dead.

Mumbaikars said the targeting of such congested areas meant that the blasts were intended to inflict high casualties.
