DREAM Act Senate Vote

The DREAM Act (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act) 2010 will give young illegal immigrants, who were brought to the country as children, a path to citizenship if they enroll in college or enlist in the military. The bill was passed by the House last night. It now goes to the Senate vote, which may happen as early as 11 am, Thursday.

But will it pass the Republican-dominated senate? Republican senators have vowed to block all legislation until a stalemate over the George W. Bush-era tax cuts is resolved.

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) said, “The DREAM Act is a nightmare for the American people. It insults American workers, American taxpayers and anyone who believes in the rule of law. The DREAM Act hurts millions of Americans who have lost their jobs, are underemployed or are threatened with layoffs. It puts the interests of illegal immigrants ahead of those of law-abiding Americans.”
