Denair Middle School Controversy on American Flag
Officials of Denair Middle School in California are now under controversy after restricting a middle school student to fly the U.S. flag from his bike while at Denair Middle School.
Denair Unified School District Superintendent Edward Parraz said Cody Alicea, 13, was told not to fly the flag after complaints from other students.
Parraz said racial tensions boiled over at the school this year around the Cinco de Mayo holiday.
“Our Hispanic, you know, kids will, you know, bring their Mexican flags and they’ll display it, and then of course the kids would do the American flag situation, and it does cause kind of a racial tension which we don’t really want,” Parraz said. “We want them to appreciate the cultures.”
Alicea’s parents said he flies the flag from his bike as a tribute to veterans in his family.

School administration and leadership should possess and exercise sound judgement. Obviously the person(s) deciding to restrict display of the American flag had no such judgement to exercise and should be dismissed. This reactionary decision sets a very poor example for students. It is also anti-patriotic. So who made this decision anyway?
This is a definite “racist” situation encouraged by the school. Superintendent Parraz has initiated this racist situation by not supporting the only flag valid in America. What a great teaching moment lost to stupid incompetent leadership. I abhor any ethnic group that comes to America and wants to bring their nationalism here. If you want to fly the Mexican flag then go home and fly it high, but here we fly only the American flag above American soil. You don’t like it then get out!

Mr. Parraz you are a coward or a liar. This is America not Mexico. I seen Mexican students flying our flag upside and the Mexican flag on top “Shouting Viva La Mexico”. What the hell is that? They come here for a free decent education and a better life and shout Viva La Mexico. Tell me I’m crazy that makes no sense. What you have done is a disgrace to Americans. I am a Veteran of two tours in VN. I believe in America and will always stand up for it. You should be FIRED! You are the Racis pure and simple. Not to let Cody fly the American flag on his bike, in honor of his family members who served in the military. This can only mean you are a traitor. Terrible decision making. I would certainly question the authorities in charge who made and supported this decision. The decision should be to have a backbone – enforce rules and allow ALL flags to be flown by students – take control of the situation and dont let racial tensions get out of hand. This is the age they learn how to handle life’s issues – what a lesson – make them all stop flying the flags they want – wow. And regardless of a situation at hand = the AMERICAN FLAG should NEVER be asked to be removed from ANYTHING when flown in AMERICA. HELLO??????? What a HORRIBLE thing and disgrace- poor poor decision making.
This is very offensive to me that in this country “The United States of America” people complain about flying an American flag. As a person who has served in the military and combat the flag has a very deep meaning to me and all of those who have fought and died for it, for anyone to say you can’t fly it in America is out of there mind. The person in charge there should be fired. If anyone is offended by our flag, pledge, or National Anthem they may feel free to leave to another country.
