You probably have heard of American documentary photographer Steve McCurry and his famous Afghan Girl photo. He was catapulted to fame when his photo of a nameless green-eyed Afghan girl graced the cover of National Geographic magazine in 1985.

Currently on display as part of a retrospective of his work at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, “Afghan Girl” has come to define his long and varied career.
